It takes tons of trial and error experimentation for world tour surfers like Conner Coffin to dial in a surfboard quiver they’re confident will result in heat wins. In this Young Wise Tails series, follow Conner to each world championship tour stop—as well as some free surf adventures in between—and gain personal insight into which Channel Islands shape he pulls out of his board bag for that particular break. Uluwatu, Bali is a unique left-hander on the tour schedule and Conner's choice to address it was seemingly unexpected—calling upon a trusted design: the Proton. Roughly a decade ago, this model (inspired by Dane Reynolds), was considered to be ahead of its time and quickly became the state-of-the-art performance board that earned CI teamriders countless tour victories. While other models such as the Fever have since become the team’s go-to board on tour, Conner decided to pull out this favorite he’d used countless time before on more powerful waves like Ulus, as well as in the Hawaiian Islands. And as you’ll see it went very well—earning him some convincing heat wins and standout turns along the way. Although not currently a design you’ll find at your local shop, the Proton can still be ordered custom through the Custom Boardbuilder at cisurfboards.com.
