Iceland Road 934 to Hengifoss

Hengifoss is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Iceland, perhaps even the most beautiful. Hengifoss is less powerful than the over-publicized Dettifoss but, with its background of alternating black and red layers, Hengifoss is really superb. It is accessible from the Þjóðvegur at Egilstadir and about 60 km from Seyðisfjörður, where Norröna ferry docks. As we came from Breiðdalsvík by road 95, we preferred to stay at the Wilderness Center in Óbyggðasetur. The Wilderness Center is less than 20 km from Hengifoss and is located along the Jökulsá í Fljötsdal River which offers great hiking opportunities. If you come after June, it is not far from the hydroelectric dam of Kárahnjúkar and the very nice Laugavellir hot spring.
