Omar Joof Dampha otherwise known as John in Liberia had served his full term in the Gambia National Army in the 1980s and left the country to work as a rebel fighter for Charles Taylor in Liberia. In Liberia, he became John Dampha and led fighting brigades in the Liberian civil war as Taylor's top fighter. His appearance before the Gambia's Truth Commission had nothing to do with his activities in Liberia but the violent attack on Farafenni Military Camp in the Gambia in 1996. Sometime in the 90s, John along with about 7 fellow Gambian fighters in the Taylor's rebel army, decided to bring the war back home to the Gambia. Their leader was Kukoi Samba Sanyang, the same man who led the 1981 abortive coup against Gambia's first president. When John and his fellow rebels attacked the Farafenni Camp in 1996, they killed 8 soldiers. They were later captured and tortured mercilessly by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Today, he is giving testimony with regards to the torture he suffered at the NIA. He was giving his testimony live on TV on December 8th, 2020 at the TRRC in Kololi.
