Filterless Walstad Betta Tank Setup (No CO2, No Liquid Fert, No Filter) - 1 Month Update Welcome to the one-month update of my new filterless Walstad Method betta fish tank! This is part of a 12-month series where I’ll be sharing the full journey of this unique setup from an over-the-shoulder perspective. I’m using a portrait-style 30-litre (8-gallon) fish tank based on the Walstad Method—no filter, minimal tech, and a strong reliance on live plants and natural processes. The tank uses a soil and gravel substrate, black lava rock hardscape, and a wide range of aquatic plants including Limnophila sessiliflora, Rotala Blood Red, Cryptocoryne beckettii ‘Petchii’, Bucephalandra, Schismatoglottis prietoi, and Water Lettuce. These plants not only look great but also help purify the water naturally, making them ideal for a betta tank. Over the first month, I monitored the cycle closely. Ammonia was released from the soil early on, but thanks to fast-growing plants like Limnophila, levels dropped to zero within two weeks without the use of bottled bacteria. The only setback was with Monte Carlo, which melted early—likely due to a buildup of excess nutrients in stagnant areas. It’s a reminder that even in a filterless aquarium, gentle water movement can make a huge difference. The betta fish tank is still unstocked while the ecosystem matures, but I’m hoping to add a wild-type Betta imbellis soon, along with some Amano or Neocaridina shrimp and possibly a few Horned Nerite snails if I can find them. This aquarium already shows strong plant growth, natural nutrient cycling, and zero ammonia or nitrite by day 28.
