(19 Dec 1994) Serb/Nat United Nations personnel are reporting that fighting continues around the northwest Bosnian town of Velika Kladusa. The village, just outside of the Bihac pocket, fell over the weekend to the rebel Muslim forces opposed to the Sarajevo government. The rebel forces are led by Fikret Abdic, who has sided with Bosnian and Croatian Serbs in the fighting that has torn apart the region. The rebel Moslem soldiers went into the small town of Velika Kladusa just north of the Bihac enclave on Saturday. Businessman Fikret Abdic led the forces, who support the Bosnian Serbs and the army of Serbo Krajina, the Serb-controlled area of Croatia. While there is continuing sniper fire, the transition of power was not very bloody. The U.N. reports the Bosnian 5th Corps pulled out, leaving snipers behind to harass the Abdic troops. Also left behind: about 200 Bangladeshi U.N. troops. They have been stationed there throughout the bitter fighting in and around Bihac over the past weeks. U.N. observers have reported seeing many refugees fleeing Velika Kladusa south toward the government-controlled area of Bihac. During the transition of power, rebel Moslems ordered Bosnian government soldiers to withdraw and lay down their weapons. SOUNDBITE: " The bulk of your army has left. Now you must lay down your guns and surrender". SUPERCAPTION: Rebel Muslim Soldier. Observers suggest that the 5th corps withdrew from the town after concluding that since both Velika Kladusa and Bihac are encircled, the territory has little military value to the Sarajevo government.
