This video explores the leaders of Macau, including the governors and chief executives of Macau. Note: Governors of Macau are shown from 1846 onwards. This is because although Portuguese roots in Macau can be traced back to the 16th century, Portuguese sovereignty over Macau had only been firmly established in the colonial period since the mid-1800s, when Macau's importance among other territories grew within the Portuguese Empire and the city became a constitutional part of Portuguese territory.
