In the final year of World War I, the British Royal Navy launched history's first-ever aircraft carrier strike mission—a daring attempt to destroy Germany’s deadly Zeppelin fleet before they could take to the skies. On July 19, 1918, seven Sopwith Camel fighters took off from the deck of HMS Furious, targeting the massive Zeppelin base in Tønder, Denmark. Known as Operation F.7, this was a bold and dangerous raid that had never been tried before. The goal: destroy the hydrogen-filled giants before they could be used to bomb Allied ships and report naval movements to German U-boats. Despite fierce winds, poor landing options, and heavy risk of death, the mission succeeded in destroying Zeppelin L.54 and L.60 inside their hangars, marking a turning point in naval aviation and aerial warfare. 🚀 This is the forgotten but epic story of how a handful of brave pilots, flying outdated biplanes with no way to land back safely, helped redefine the future of aircraft carriers—and brought the mighty Zeppelins to their knees.
