Episode 19: Save Water by Irrigating with Ollas

Ceramic pots (ollas) are permeable clay pots that slowly release water underground, reducing evaporation. They are a useful way to irrigate established plants, but they should not be relied upon to water seeds. Watch this short video about the olla’s we use in our demonstration beds at ZIlker Botanical Garden. Ollas generally cost between $25 and $40, depending on their size. You can purchase Dripping Springs Ollas locally at several garden stores. If this is beyond your price range, you can substitute them with glass or plastic bottles. Simply poke or drill small holes in the bottom of the bottles and bury them in the ground. Don’t forget to subscribe or follow us as we transform our vegetable gardens at Zilker Botanical (currently closed) into a modern victory garden. We are celebrating our 75 Year Anniversary as a club and will be offering all of our lessons for FREE! Become a member of the oldest organic gardening club in the U.S. at www.AustinOrganicGardeners.org. Memberships are only $10 a year and 100% of your dues support Zilker Botanical Garden. #organicgardening #austinorganicgardeners #fallgardening #fallgardeningzone8b #fallgardeningTexas #zone8b #zone8bgardener #zilkerbotanicalgarden #zilkerconservancy #zilker #traviscountygardening #centraltexasgardening #centraltexasgardener #soilweb #soilbuilding #wickingbed #selfwateringbed #watersaver #gardeningindrought
