How do you turn a collection of photos into something deeper, more powerful, and truly memorable? In this week’s video, I’m sharing how to tell a story with a cohesive group of photos — how to create your own photo essay. Whether you’re a beginner with a phone camera, an enthusiastic hobbyist, or a seasoned photographer looking for a fresh spark, this is one of the most meaningful projects you can do. Most of us take photos one at a time. A striking portrait here. A beautiful landscape there. A quick street shot or a fleeting sunset. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that — in fact, that joy of capturing moments is what brings most of us into photography in the first place. But what if you want more? What if you want to create something deeper, more intentional, with a clear theme and a goal in mind? That’s where a photo essay comes in. In this video, I’ll show you: What a photo essay actually is – and why it’s so much more than just a collection of images. How to choose a theme that sparks your curiosity and makes you want to keep going back. Simple steps to plan your images without overthinking or getting stuck in technical details. How to shoot with intention and return to your subject again and again to capture its depth. How to curate your final set of images so they tell a story rather than sit as isolated shots. I’ll also share a personal project of mine — a photo essay on the ancient coastal city of Ashkelon. I love the sea, but what drew me in was its gritty authenticity. It’s not sleek or shiny. Parts of it feel like stepping back 50 or even 100 years. By returning there over time, capturing not just the horizon but the people and textures of the city, I built a body of work that eventually became an exhibit. I hope my experience will inspire you to look at your own surroundings with fresh eyes. This approach works whether you photograph: Street photography in your hometown Landscape photography in your favorite park or by the sea Documentary projects about family, community, or everyday life Travel photography that goes beyond postcard images You don’t need expensive gear or perfect light. You need curiosity, patience, and a willingness to let your photos speak for themselves. Photo essay "Country Doctor" by W. Eugene Smith: https://www.life.com/history/w-eugene... 👉 Your challenge this week: pick one small theme. It might be a street corner, the life of a café, your garden in the evening, or the people who pass by your favorite spot. Photograph it with care. Go back more than once. Pay attention to details, context, wide shots, and emotions. Then, when you look at those images together, see what story begins to emerge. If you create your own photo essay, I’d love to see it! And if you’re ready to dive even deeper, some of you have already reached out for one-on-one sessions — and those have been some of my favorite ways to help photographers grow and find their unique voice.
