Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Psikyo Publisher: Jaleco Year of Release: 1994 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- Another game I chose completely at random, I was left pleasantly surprised by this mid-90s shoot 'em up. It wasn't until I did some research later on that I discovered Gunbird received releases for PlayStation and Sega Saturn consoles in 1995, with an eventual sequel following in 1998. Unlike other games of this type, Gunbird randomises the first four stages of the game's first loop, which does add some variety to the proceeding on subsequent replays. Beat the end boss, and you'll face a second loop with noticeably tougher enemies that shoot out more projectiles. This makes for a game that's certainly on the tougher end of the spectrum of shooters, but it's by no means the worst. As for player mechanics, Gunbird doesn't feature anything particularly out-of-the-ordinary here. Tapping the fire button unleashes a volley of projectiles in the direction of the enemy, while holding the button down charges up a special attack. In the case of the character I chose, this was thrust with the magic staff she was carrying, which did significant damage to anything it hit, with the added bonus of nullifying enemy projectiles it came into contact with. The player's primary weapon can be boosted by collecting bullet-shaped capsules left behind by certain enemies, but getting hit causes the power level to drop one level. Overall, I thought Gunbird was a solid shooter. The graphics and audio are generally excellent throughout, and it's sufficiently challenging for even the most seasoned of players. The added interactions between the different characters in 2-player mode mean there's more to discover beyond the single player experience, making Gunbird worth a look.
