This year the PTAR celebrated its centenary at Ermelo in Mpumalanga. As one of the most important air races in the world the race was originally known as the Governor General’s Cup Air Race that was first staged in 1937 to coincide with the opening of Stanford Hill, Durban’s new airport. The President’s Trophy Air Race is run annually over two days at the end of May each year. It is a handicap race and open to all Class C1 aircraft with reciprocating engines. Handicaps are developed to attempt to give each aircraft a chance of winning. The handicap system also allows aircraft of different type to compete against each other. For the first time this year, GPS equipment was allowed and only autopilots were disengaged. The PTAR is probably the South African aviation event with the largest number of competitors. Over several years the race attracted in the region of 100 crews. However, this year the PTAR had 57 entries, which is good considering the difficult post COVID-19 times that South African aviators are managing. Each day the competitors will fly a course of approximately 300 nautical miles. Entrants need to have a minimum cruise speed of 100 knots and be able to cover the distance with legal fuel reserves remaining.
