Using PyMakr2 and creating a MicroDot website

This video is about Pymakr 2 micropython IDE extension and the MicroDot micropython web server. Since I was last working on micropython, I had to update my favorite programming micropython environment of Visual Studio Code (IDE) and Pymakr 1. Pycom the company that was supporting the PyMakr VSC extension seems to have been brought out and is no longer supporting pyMakr. Fortunately, Jakob Rosenberg from Pycom had updated, and made a public version of PyMakr available. It has changed quite a bit from the earlier version (and is a little tricky to use) so I go over setting up PyMakr2 and how I use it. I’ll demonstrate the development environment by building a microdot micropython based web server. I will be needing to use microdot in my telephone spam guard (potGuard) project and will expand on using it in follow up videos. 00:00 Introduction 02:01 Where to get Visual Studio Code (VSC) IDE. 02:13 Adding the Pymakr 2 extension to VSC. I included the link below to the vsix release files, I am not sure how long the Pycom github repository will stay around so its probably good to get a copy of the vsix extension file. You will then be able to load Pymakr using that file. 03:10 To start a new micropython project, first I create a new folder in VSC to be the home for the project. Note: VSC and Pymakr supports workspaces that include multiple folders, this made things a bit too complicated for my liking so I have stuck with a single high level project folder for my projects. 03:45 To enable Pymakr for the project created in the VSC folder, above, I create a new Pymakr project in the VSC folder. Note: I selected “Empty” project template to get started. You will notice there are more options than I show that can be added to the pyMakr.conf file. The "py_ignore" is a useful addition setting to restrict what files get copied to the microcontroller. My setting is usually "py_ignore" : [".vscode",".gitignore",".git","env", "venv", "readme.md" ]. 04:53 I add some basic code to my micropython project to be able to demonstrate pyMakr deploying code and running code on the microcontroller. 05:26 To make working with the project easier I add the pyMakr project view to the explorer view. This way I can work on code and then use pyMakr to deploy code from the same view (This is the thing that was the biggest difference from Pymakr1 and took a while to work out that it was the best way to set up my IDE environment) 06:41 I run this “Hello World” micropython project on my microcontroller. 07:17 I look at the PyMakr extension settings and remove being prompted for the device to deploy the code to. This may be a useful option if you are deploying to multiple devices at the same time, but if just working on one device then it is not really needed. 08:16 A look at some of the other capabilities of PyMakr2. 10:40 Part 2, I look at setting up a microdot web server. 10:57 I want to have the web server control a relay connected to the Raspberry Pi Pico W microcontroller. This is in preparation for controlling a telephone line, I look at the hardware. 12:07 A quick look at the microdot github repository and resources. Note: Clicking on the “Code” button allows you to download a zip file of the repository. 13:31 Making a simple “Hello World” web site using microdot. 16:07 Adding web services to the microdot web site to control the relay. 18:06 Running the web services and controlling the relay. 18:46 What’s next for the potGuard project.
