Lake Towada and Oirase Stream, two of the most popular places to view autumn leaves in the Tohoku region. Lake Towada is a caldera lake that straddles Aomori and Akita prefectures, and is designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" by the government. From the observatory, you can see the outer ring of Lake Towada, the mountains of Minami-Hakkoda, and the long and narrow Nakayama Peninsula. The statue of the Maiden is a bronze statue standing on the Nakayama Peninsula of Lake Towada, and is the work of the poet and sculptor Kotaro Takamura. The pair of women, facing each other with their left hands clasped, is a symbol of Lake Towada. Towada Shrine is located on the Nakayama peninsula of Lake Towada, about a 10-minute walk from the Maiden Statue, and the shrine pavilions standing in the quiet forest have a mysterious atmosphere. Kankodai is a lookout point overlooking the middle lake between the Ogura and Nakayama peninsulas of Lake Towada, and offers a wonderful view of the clear surface of the lake as a sightseeing boat leaves its tracks. Don't miss the rarely seen scene of Lake Towada at the height of autumn colors, when the outer rim of the mountain is covered with white snow and snow after a major cold wave! Utarube is a lakeside area on the east side of the Ogura Peninsula, and campgrounds and guest houses are scattered nearby. It is a place where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Ogura Peninsula, the outer rim of the mountain, and the southern Hakkoda mountains. Nenokuchi is also the outlet of the Oirase Stream, and is famous as one of the sightseeing spots of Lake Towada. The Oirase Stream is a beautiful mountain stream that starts from Nenokuchi of Lake Towada and stretches for about 14 km. It is designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" by the Japanese government, and is also selected as one of the "100 Best Autumn Leaves in Japan. Choshi Otaki is the only waterfall that spans the main stream of the Oirase Stream, and is 20 meters wide and 7 meters high, with abundant and dynamic water. There are many other waterfalls along the Oirase Stream, including Shiraito Falls, Furo Falls, Shiranuno Falls, and Kumoi Falls. The autumn leaves that color the main stream of the Oirase Stream are also magnificent, especially the scenic spots where the water flows violently, such as "Heisei no nagare" and "Asura no nagare".
