It may well be the next-best-thing to getting new cartilage: mending knees by transplanting cartilage to reinforce damaged tissue. “There is a way to arthroscopically move a piece of bone and cartilage that’s healthy to an area that’s either worn off or missing,” says Dr. John Kagan, who is an orthopedic surgeon on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. We only get one shot at producing cartilage- a cushioning tissue it helps absorb shock around the joint. In the knee, cartilage damage often begins a cycle that eventually leads to joint replacement. “If we can take some precautions early on and treat things earlier then we slow down the progression of the damage and the arthritis,” says Dr. Kagan. Younger patients with cartilage loss are generally sidelined by injury rather than age-related arthritis which slowly deteriorates the cartilage. Transplantation is an option to fix those damaged knees and restore function. “We take the bone and cartilage from a non-weight baring, non-contact area and move it to a part that is weight bearing. I’ve even taken cartilage from another knee and moved it to an area in the ankle where the cartilage is absent,” says Dr. Kagan. Patients have to avoid putting weight on the joint for about six weeks. Giving the tissue time to grow together. Filling the void may help people get the most out of their joints.
