Wide shot of people ripping up a large replica of a U.S. flag STORYLINE: Hundreds of anti-US and pro-unification demonstrators clashed with police near the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Sunday during a protest against plans to send 3,000 additional troops to Iraq. Demonstrators ripped up a large replica of a U.S. flag before attempting to charge through police blockades. About 5,000 demonstrators converged on a street of Gwanghwamun, a major intersection in downtown Seoul to urge president Roh Moo-Hyun to abandon the troop deployment plans. Officers in riot gear responded by spraying water at the demonstrators, who used flag poles to poke at police. The government deployed thousand of police in the capital in a massive show of force against two-day pro-unification street demonstrations by leftist activists. Some of the protesters belonged to the Reunification Solidarity, a coalition of activist groups which are considered pro-North Korean. This month, South Korea began sending 3,000 troops to northern Iraq to join 660 soldiers already stationed in the country's south. The South Korean government has portrayed the troop deployment as a way of strengthening ties with the United States and winning Washington's support for a peaceful end to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear programmes.
