John Cena is one of the greatest WWE superstars of all time. His dominance lasted over a decade, making him the face of the company and a global icon. But behind his success, there’s a darker side—the careers that crumbled under his shadow. Whether through backstage politics, creative decisions, or outright burials in the ring, Cena’s rise to the top often came at the expense of others. Today, we take a look at the wrestlers who fell victim to SuperCena. Alex Riley: The Mysterious Blacklisting Alex Riley had all the tools to be a star—a great look, charisma, and a solid push alongside The Miz. But after a promising start, his career vanished overnight. The reason? Many believe it was backstage heat with Cena. Riley himself has hinted at issues but never revealed details. Some former WWE stars, like Ryback, suggested there’s more to the story that no one wants to talk about. After being relegated to commentary, Riley was eventually released, and his WWE career ended before it ever truly began. Damien Sandow: The Worst Money in the Bank Cash-In Damien Sandow was one of WWE’s most entertaining heels. His Intellectual Savior of the Masses gimmick was over with the fans, and his 2013 Money in the Bank win seemed like the start of something big. But when it came time to cash in, he faced John Cena—who had an injured arm. It should’ve been an easy victory for Sandow, but instead, Cena beat him clean, with one arm. That loss destroyed Sandow’s credibility. He was never pushed again, and despite later success as Mizdow, he was released in 2016. Rusev: The Man Who Was Never Allowed to Win Rusev was one of WWE’s best-built heels, an undefeated monster holding the U.S. Championship. Then came WrestleMania 31. Making an entrance in a literal tank, Rusev looked ready to dominate. Instead? Cena beat him clean. From that point, Rusev’s career spiraled downward. WWE ignored the popularity of "Rusev Day," and he was eventually released in 2020, later stating backstage politics held him back. The Nexus: The Worst Booking Decision of Cena’s Career The Nexus was WWE’s hottest faction in 2010. Led by Wade Barrett, they destroyed everything in sight, including Cena. At SummerSlam 2010, The Nexus had to win to remain a credible threat. Even veterans like Edge and Jericho told Cena to let them go over. But Cena refused. After taking a DDT on concrete, Cena miraculously recovered, eliminated the final two Nexus members, and buried an entire faction in one night. The Nexus never recovered. Within a year, the group was dead, and most of its members were gone.
