The Story of Jehu in the Bible 📖 2 Kings 9–10 👑 Who Was Jehu? Jehu was a military commander in Israel who served under King Joram (Ahab’s son). God chose him to become king of Israel and to carry out divine judgment against the wicked house of Ahab and Jezebel, who had led the people into idolatry and sin through the worship of Baal. The prophet Elisha sent a young prophet to secretly anoint Jehu as king with oil, giving him this message from the Lord: “You shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets.” — 2 Kings 9:7 🔥 Jehu’s Divine Mission Once anointed, Jehu immediately began to fulfill God’s command. He rode in his chariot with great determination — Scripture says he drove “furiously” (2 Kings 9:20) — ready to confront evil head-on. Jehu went to Jezreel, where King Joram and King Ahaziah of Judah were visiting. When Joram came out to meet him, Jehu declared: “What peace, as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?” — 2 Kings 9:22 Then Jehu drew his bow and shot an arrow straight through King Joram’s heart — fulfilling God’s word through Elijah. 🧱 The Fall of Jezebel After killing Joram, Jehu entered Jezreel, where Queen Jezebel was waiting. She tried to appear proud and fearless, painting her eyes and looking out from a window. Jehu commanded her own servants to throw her down — and she was killed instantly. Dogs devoured her body, fulfilling Elijah’s prophecy (2 Kings 9:30–37). This was a clear sign that God’s judgment had arrived on the house of Ahab. ⚖️ Jehu Destroys Ahab’s Descendants Jehu didn’t stop there. He traveled to Samaria and ordered the death of Ahab’s seventy sons to remove all trace of Ahab’s wicked rule. Though this act was violent, it was part of God’s judgment for the sins Ahab and Jezebel had committed against Israel and the prophets of the Lord. Jehu also had the officials and priests of Ahab’s household executed, bringing complete justice to what Elijah had foretold years earlier. 🏛️ Jehu Destroys Baal Worship Jehu was zealous for God and wanted to remove all worship of Baal from Israel. He devised a clever plan: He pretended to hold a great feast for Baal and gathered all the priests and worshipers into the temple. But once they were inside, Jehu ordered his men to strike them down and destroy the temple. “Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.” — 2 Kings 10:28 ⚠️ Jehu’s Mistake Although Jehu was obedient in carrying out God’s judgment and destroying Baal worship, he did not fully follow the Lord with all his heart. He allowed the people to continue worshiping the golden calves at Bethel and Dan — the same false gods that had led Israel astray for generations. Because of this, Jehu’s faithfulness was partial, not complete. God rewarded him for what he did right, saying his descendants would rule for four generations — but Israel still faced trouble because the people’s hearts were not truly turned back to God.
