In recent months, Romania has experienced several important events in different areas, such as politics, economy, culture and social situation. EU Member States have decided to abolish controls on people at internal land borders with Bulgaria and Romania and between these two countries as of 1 January 2025. It is a historic moment to finally welcome Bulgaria and Romania as full members of Schengen. The abolition of controls on people at internal land borders with and between these Member States and Member States has been an absolute priority for the Hungarian Presidency, and today it has made it a reality. This step will benefit not only Bulgarian and Romanian citizens, but also the EU as a whole and will help mitigate the vulgar but widespread notion that this region is the back of Europe. Romania has been facing political tensions, especially due to judicial reforms and anti-corruption measures. There has been a growing debate about the independence of the judiciary, particularly in relation to proposed changes in laws that could affect corruption investigations in the country. In addition, there have been changes within the government, with adjustments to the ruling coalition that includes the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Union Save Romania (USR). These moves have generated a certain degree of political instability, which has affected public confidence in institutions. But the straw that broke the camel's back was the annulment of the elections in which candidate Calin Georgescu had triumphed, who was accused of winning based on excessive influence from the social network Tik Tok. Protests have been ongoing in the country since the annulment. Romania has maintained positive economic growth in recent months, despite the challenges arising from global inflation and the effects of the war in Ukraine. However, inflation rates, especially energy prices, remain a concern, as energy remains one of the biggest costs for the Romanian economy. Despite inflation, the Romanian economy continues to show signs of growth, partly thanks to the strong technology sector, the automotive industry and the export of agricultural products. Integration into the European Union has been a key factor allowing access to European funds for infrastructure and regional development. The war in Ukraine, which has been going on for several years, continues to have a significant impact on the region. Romania has been a major player in the humanitarian response and in hosting Ukrainian refugees. The situation in Ukraine has also affected the Romanian economy due to refugee flows, disruption of supply chains and pressure on energy prices, especially gas and oil. The Romanian health system continues to face difficulties, especially due to a lack of resources and staff. Despite efforts to improve infrastructure, the COVID-19 pandemic left deep scars, and the country continues to struggle with a shortage of doctors and an aging population. In the cultural sphere, Romania remains an important hub in Eastern Europe, with a boom in the film industry, music and the arts. In particular, the Transylvania International Film Festival has been a highlight on the country’s cultural calendar, as have other music and art festivals. There has also been growing interest in tourism, especially in the Transylvania region, famous for its history, castles and natural landscapes. However, tourism is still affected by pandemic restrictions and political uncertainty in the region. Romania has continued to strengthen its relations within the European Union and with other countries in the Balkan region. In addition, the country has played an active role in NATO, especially as the security of Eastern Europe has become a more prominent priority due to the war in Ukraine. #OpenYourWindowToTheWorld #TravelingIsHyperliving 🌎 Subtitles in Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Russian and English. 🔎 I am Gustavo Llusá, Argentine, after traveling for several years through more than 75 countries I settled in Latvia where I married Dace and learned to know another way of life, on the other side of the map.
