Isabelle Anderson, Director of The Winter's Tale, describes Shakespeare's satyr scene. The wild arrival of the herdsmen invokes the power of spring in a fertility ritual common to cultures the world over. The scene takes place during the second act of The Winter's Tale, as the dark winter of the first act transitions to the joy of a springtime sheep-shearing festival in Shakespeare's Bohemia. Many directors cut this scene, but Anderson kept it for its passion, symbolism and exuberance - a cure for our own long winter.
