Poem: Chapter 1 - Past Standing before the ancient rock Listening to the whispers from the past I heard a deep voice of a rock Reminding us of the Dreaming Time Once a upon a time Before the time beyond history On the land of no name There lived humans in harmony with nature They woke up smelling the air Standing barefoot on the cool ground Greeting the sun with gratitude And, listening to the wisdom of stones Children played with insects Asking them to send message to the neighbor Villagers danced around bonfire As elders listened to the fire spirits Rocks carried the stories of grandfather Trees stood still to protect the village Kangaroos embodied the memories of ancestors And, people saw divinity on the entire land Stones on the sand were micro-cosmos Floating in the ocean of macro-cosmos Rocks hosted divine presence And, totems whispered their messages When there was no ownership of the land We were a part of the greater whole When our relationships included all the living organism We were a part of a cycle of the earth This is a memory of a peaceful land Before the spiritual sun hid herself It is a dream of a joyful world Before a rock sealed our inner sun into the cave of Samsara Chapter 2 – Devastation When four warships arrived at the coast And cannons bombarded against the native’s land It was the whistle for a new beginning The beginning called, ‘devastation’ Communities were deprived of old faith And, a new interpretation was applied to old spirituality A new religion replaced the old belief system And old temples and lands, destroyed Farmers were separated from their fields Natives were removed from ancestral lands Old residents became factory slaves Under the name of industrial revolution Cultural assimilation meant identity crisis Cultural suppression was a form of violence When old spirituality was named, ‘superstition’ People lost their connection to their origins When humans stopped listening to grandfathers Rocks were seen as just rocks When trees were no longer ‘standing people’ Nature became an object to conquer When divine rocks became story of the past People stopped seeing fairies and elves When people stopped dreaming of kangaroos We were distanced from the ancestors Chapter 3 - Lament Oh, how did we get to this point, where we lost the connection with the earth? How can we no longer hear our ancestors, even though the rocks still stand on the abandoned lands? Multilayered destructions separated us from the lands And, oppression of old faith resulted in our identity crisis Assimilation to dominant culture meant eradication of the old And, beliefs in ‘superiority’ resulted in the violence Wounded eucalyptus is standing still And, ancient stones are whispering their dreams But, traumatized natives lost self-confidence And, people forgot to dance around the fire Oh, how can we go back to the world of harmony? How can we retrieve our dreams? As we stand in deep despair Echoes of the past was carried in dusty wind Chapter 4 – Prayer After a dark night of winter There comes a warm dawn of spring When melted snow runs through a creek New buds of flowers cover the forgotten field As the seasons of earth turn their wheels So does the wheel of human life When the wheels of the world turn around Why not the human civilization? When the superior culture falls apart We recollect our ancestral memories When we re-open our heart to our inner relations to earth Rocks start whispering their dreams of the past When dreams of the past become our dreams of the future We join the birds in singing a song of joy When we re-discover our dance of ancestors Our inner sun may re-appear to warm our heart Oh, fire brother, dance with us Oh, water sister, bring your healing Oh, mother earth, nurture our land And, father sky, show us the path As the plants need sun and water Humans need logic and intuition Then, why not a civilization, needing two opposites Material technology and conscious nature-connection? As we pray for the better future We realize the needs for trauma-healing of the past When we honor the beauty of all civilizations We recognize the needs to forgive ourselves and others Oh rocks, please tell us your dreams Oh trees, please whisper your wisdoms As I believe in the cycle of seasons May the wheel of the world, turn around
