Wild card! UAE grants first CASINO license in the region to Wynn, construction begins

A casino is coming to the Middle East 👀 Wynn Resorts — which holds the trademark for “Arabian Strip” — now has permission to build the first casino, received a license to operate a “gaming facility” in the UAE, according to a report in SEMAFOR GULF. The announcement follows two years of activity that has included the establishment of a national gaming authority, the arrival of US casino execs, and progress on Wynn’s $2.25-billion resort in Ras Al Khaimah. Still, according to the report, “it’s all been a bit hush-hush: there is no formal gambling law in the UAE and officials have yet to utter the word “casino” in public,” preferring the term “gaming.” The development is the Company's first beachfront resort and is being built on almost 62 hectares jutting into the Arabian Gulf. Wynn Resorts is developing the project in partnership with Marjan and RAK Hospitality Holding. It is anticipated to be the first integrated gaming resort in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region. Casinos have not been built in the region due to social norms and customs that look down upon gambling -- but that looks to be changing...
