FAN STORY: READ BELOW A Conversation with Julie Andrews and Alex Jenning: Venue: The Royal Festival Hall, London Date: 2nd of November, 2019 Interviews: BBC Breakfast - BBC (News), November 4, 2019 Lorraine - ITV, November 4, 2019 ------------------------------------------ 30 years earlier I had attended Julie Andrews’ Christmas Concert at The Royal Festival Hall (The Magic of Christmas) and now Julie was back in the Hall to promote her new memoir and discuss her career with actor Alex Jennings, who had starred as Professor Henry Higgins in the Australian production of My Fair Lady, which Julie had directed. When we found out that Fane Productions was having Julie over from the USA to promote her memoir, Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years, we were ecstatic. We felt a bit disappointed when we found out that we could only buy a maximum of 4 tickets each, so in order to increase the chances of getting good seats I became a member of the Southbank Centre and was then offered to join the presale for the tickets. I’m so glad I did, as when they went on general release they sold out on the day! So, I knew of fans travelling from all over Europe to attend this event. As we rarely get to see Julie in the UK nowadays, I wanted to produce a memento for this occasion. So a badge was created and distributed for free with the fans. Unfortunately, demand outstripped the supply but you can see what it looked like in this video. I went for VIP tickets, not because I wanted them, but other fans had already snapped up the front row seats, so VIP it would have to be. It just entailed you to have a glass of Prosecco and not a meet and greet with our fair lady. On the day I met up with my oldest Julie friends as we had shared so many “moments” in the past. I wish there would have been more time to share with the other fans, as many had travelled far to get here. Eventually, I ended up sitting further back in the stalls, and as we were taking our seats I recognized a face and I said “You know Julie? And he said “Yes”. At the time I couldn’t place him, but it was Julie’s hair stylist John Isaacs. As I turned around I stood facing Steve Sauer, Julie’s manager and companion on events like this. He said “Don’t I get a hug?” In shock, I hugged him. So I said “We had a disagreement about Julie’s 2014 tour….” I can’t remember what he answered but then he said “We’ll come and get you afterwards” and I said “Say that again”, still in shock, so he repeated what he had just said and then he left. For a while my head was spinning, after having been a fan for 45 years I was finally going to meet Julie officially! As Steve and I never had met face to face, I eventually realised that he must have mistaken me for somebody else (George Clooney?). When he came back for me after the talk had finished a woman sitting close by shouted “It’s not him!” and so ended my dream of having tea with Julie Andrews … I’m glad to say that there were many witnesses to this rather bizarre event. When Julie came on stage with Alex the entire Festival Hall rose to their feet and cheered. Luckily, a fan had asked if it would be ok to take photographs at the end of the talk and Julie did agree to that. When Julie left and waved us goodbye, she received another standing ovation and you could feel the love in the room. Don’t stay away too long… Anders --------------------- Sources: BBC Breakfast, ITV’s Lorraine and Richard Kates.
