"For as in one body, we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another." Pretend it’s a game show. The category is, “Things That Don’t Work Because of Missing Parts." The answers are: A flashlight with no batteries. A car with three tires. A recipe without the main ingredient. A phone without a charger. A pair of glasses with one lens missing. A puzzle with a missing piece. A church without people. Paul already knows what it takes some of us a long time to figure out. We need each other. We need God. He takes a look under the hood to describe how a church works and functions. It’s made up of various parts that are designed to work together. Collectively all the parts combine to create something bigger and more valuable. Paul lists some of the parts that are necessary in building and sustaining a vibrant and faithful church. Some are teachers, leaders, and servers. Some are encouragers and others are generous with their resources. Each has a particular role to play. Everyone has gifts to bring. All the parts working together empower the church to be the hands and hearts of Jesus. We are better together. Together, when all the pieces fit, God helps form a loose collection of individuals into a living, cohesive body. Every person matters. Every person is essential. Which brings us to the real point of the passage. If everyone has a part and everyone has a role. What’s yours? What do you bring to the table? What gifts do you have that helps the church carry out its mission and ministry? How do you use your gift and work with others to build the church we all pray for? When Jesus chose you, what do you think He saw in you? We are better together.
