It captures a sacred moment and marks the transition into the High Renaissance. This revolutionary mural, completed around 1498, revolutionized religious painting and established new standards in artistic technique that would influence generations to come. Looking at the painting of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, you will be fascinated by the rhythm of the composition, with the harmonic distribution of the Apostles around Jesus, of which is also quite easy to identify the pattern: The Last Supper measures 460 cm × 880 cm (15 ft 1 in × 28 ft 10 in) and covers an end wall of the monastery's dining hall. Mathematical Mastery and Sacred Geometry Leonardo's genius shines through his sophisticated use of mathematical symbolism throughout the composition. The painting is a masterclass in sacred geometry, where every element serves both artistic and symbolic purposes. The number three, representing the Holy Trinity, appears repeatedly throughout the work. The disciples are carefully arranged in four groups of three, three windows punctuate the background, and Christ himself is framed in a perfect triangular composition formed by his outstretched arms and body. The golden ratio, or divine proportion, weaves through the painting's structure, creating a sense of perfect harmony. This mathematical relationship (approximately 1:1.618) appears in the proportions of the tables, the walls, and even the space between figures. However, it's Leonardo's use of these mathematical principles not just as technical exercises but as tools to enhance the painting's spiritual message that truly sets this work apart.
