Video shows assault that left 75-year-old man with broken hip and neck

James Spampinato, a 75-year-old city resident, is recovering from a broken hip and neck after he was assaulted Sunday outside of Ariana Super Market on Culver Road. The incident, which was captured on camera, occurred less than two weeks before he was set to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. "I was just going into the store to get some scratch tickets... and get attacked," Spampinato recalled. James' daughter, Crista Spampinato, recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining that her father was trying to turn into the parking lot when he honked at a woman standing in the the entrance. "He pulled in, and that's when the other woman got out of the car," Crista said through tears. "I don't know what she was yelling at him, but he stood up and he tried to walk to the side away from her, and that's when she knocked him down." "(My) hip is busted and a broken neck, and I don’t know why she did it... and left me laying there," James said. James said nobody at the store or nearby called the police, and he remained on the ground until a bystander eventually helped him to his truck. "I was in so much pain, and I was screaming a little bit, even to her (the suspect) to help me," James recalled. "Then I got into my truck, the vehicle, (and) surprisingly, I drove home. I just wanted to get out of there and go home." With the wedding quickly approaching, Crista hopes her father will be well enough to attend. "Hoping we can get him to my ceremony in a wheelchair," Crista said. "I want him to see me get married."
