Hey, I’m Sylvia, and I’m passionate about singing in harmony, in community, in public! I am a song leader and voice empowerment coach, and I host singalongs like this one at El Faro Market in Parksville, BC. This song (despite it’s dark history with the original composer Solomon Linda never being properly compensated during his lifetime) is so much fun to sing in a large group, because everyone knows it and there’s so much room for improvisation and playful self-expression! I was joined on stage by Jean Tejkel on bass and Andrea Turrell on djembe, and you can hear the audience singing along; some singers are from my “Sing Again” community choir: a welcoming and encouraging community where we free our voices and learn to sing in harmony! Other folks there that night had such a great time, they will be joining us. Spontaneous joyful singing creates instant connection between strangers - I feel like I’m living my dream!
