The April 29, 2016 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds "SCIENCE NOW" format highlights back-to-back lectures by faculty members who are currently accepting trainees into their research programs. Dawn Belt Davis, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, UW-Madison Department of Medicine, presented "It's More Than Just Insulin and Glucagon: New Hormones Produced in the Pancreatic Islet." Dr. Davis studies pathways that regulate beta cell renewal and survival in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and pancreas cell transplant models. Loren Denlinger, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, UW-Madison Department of Medicine, presented "Exacerbation Prone Asthma: A Distinct Phenotype with Opportunities for Personalized Therapy." Dr. Denlinger's laboratory studies the roles of extracellular nucleotides as paracrine stress hormones. University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine Grand Rounds are presented throughout the academic year and are intended for health care professionals and medical researchers. Unless otherwise indicated, Grand Rounds occurs in the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital auditorium, Room A1028, Madison, Wisconsin.
