In this video, I discuss how gold performs in both inflationary and deflationary environments. Even though Japan has been stuck in a deflationary regime since the mid-1990's, gold as measured in yen has performed really well, even when consumer price inflation was negative. This is because of increases in the money supply by the Bank of Japan. Gold has also performed really well inflationary regimes, as we have seen in Turkey and Argentina over the past 5 years. With the Federal Reserve increasing the money supply at record rates in the U.S. in 2020, we should continue to see gold (and other scarce assets like Bitcoin) continue to perform really well.
