Join this channel to get access to perks: / @world_wide_birds The Peach-Faced Lovebird, scientifically known as Agapornis roseicollis, is one of the most widely kept and successfully bred lovebird species in aviculture. Native to the dry savanna woodlands of southwest Africa, this small yet energetic parrot has become a favorite among breeders due to its manageable size, social nature, and extraordinary range of color mutations. In this comprehensive guide, we cover: • Natural distribution and habitat • Physical description and identification • Housing and aviary setup • Social behavior and bonding • Feeding requirements • Breeding cycles and nesting • Egg incubation and fledging • Understanding genetic mutations • Base color series explained • Dominant, recessive, and sex-linked traits 🌍 Distribution & Habitat Peach-Faced Lovebirds inhabit semi-desert regions of Namibia and Angola, living in dry woodland and rocky environments. They are dependent on water sources and often gather in flocks around pools. Feral populations now exist in areas such as Phoenix, Arizona and parts of Hawaii. The species is classified as Least Concern by conservation authorities. 🦜 Physical Description Wild-type birds are primarily green with: • Blue rump • Pink face and throat • Horn-colored bill • Brown iris • Grey legs and feet Males and females are monomorphic, meaning they look identical. DNA testing is the most reliable method of sex determination. 🏡 Keeping Peach-Faced Lovebirds These parrots are: • Highly social • Strong pair-bonders • Active and vocal • Intelligent and curious Daily enrichment and supervised exercise are important. 🥕 Feeding In captivity, a balanced diet should include: • Quality seed or pellet mix • Fresh vegetables • Leafy greens • Sprouted seeds • Occasional fruit Fresh food should be removed after several hours to prevent spoilage. 🪺 Breeding Information 🧬 Understanding Mutations Peach-Faced Lovebirds have one of the widest mutation ranges among lovebird species. Base Color Series All birds belong to one of two base color groups: Green Series (dominant) Blue Series (recessive) A bird carrying a recessive gene without showing it visually is called “split” for that trait. Other Mutation Categories Co-Dominant Mutations: • Orangefaced • Dark • Violet Recessive Mutations: • Edged Dilute Sex-Linked Mutations: • Lutino • Pallid (Australian Cinnamon) • American Cinnamon • Opaline Understanding how dominant, recessive, and sex-linked genetics function is essential for responsible breeding. Breeders should prioritize health and genetic stability above color production. Intro video courtesy: azuki🐥birds🦜ch • peach faced lovebird bite a parakeet bal...
