As we get older, we expect our diet and appetite to alter, and it's natural to eat less as you get older. Mobility limitations may cause older persons to lessen their physical activity, and their metabolism may slow, resulting in fewer calories needed to be consumed. Regardless, it is critical to eat on a regular basis. Eating a well-balanced, diverse diet that allows us to acquire the proper quantity of nutrients every day helps us stay healthy, combat illness, maintain our energy levels, keep our minds active, influence our mood, and many other vital things. Regular meals also assist to break up the day, especially if you live alone or are unable to leave the house frequently. Weight loss, decreased appetite, self-isolation, and sadness are common side effects for people who struggle with eating utensils. They may eat less than they need to achieve their daily nutritional demands, or they may be unable to eat items they used to enjoy. Thankfully, there are a variety of highly efficient devices available to assist people eat independently even if they have difficulty using traditional utensils. Adaptive eating utensils and accessories are available in a variety of models and styles to meet the specific requirements of individual user. On today’s video, I will go through different types of tools/utensils that could change the lives of those who need it. These are silverware and kitchen tools designed to make eating more enjoyable and less of a chore for people with physical or developmental disabilities like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), strokes, tremors, hand deformities, poor fine motor skills, weak grip, and arthritis, to name a few. Some have more ergonomic designs, while others allow users to operate totally without using their hands. For the first adaptive utensil, we have the Bendable Utensils. These are particularly helpful for individuals with Arthritis. In patients with arthritis, impaired hand function is common, and it has an impact on everyday tasks and quality of life. Reduced hand function appears early in the disease's progression, and the loss of strength and dexterity impacts a variety of daily chores. Impaired hand grip function can be caused by a variety of factors, including pain, muscle weakness, and, in some cases, hand deformity. These utensils are not any heavier than the regular eating utensils, with large soft grips. The purpose of this eating tool is to help individuals or patients with hand dexterity problems. As mentioned above, patients with arthritis can benefit from this tool given that these have large grips which means that they don’t have to hold their utensils so tightly. The Bendable Utensils can enhance independence because this can decrease difficulty to get food into the mouth. The second adaptive tool I`m showing you are the weighted utensils. These look like your regular utensils but they are heavy. This specific tool is made for individuals who have good hand dexterity which means they can pinch well but are experiencing tremors. This utensil can dampen their grip and increase independence when eating. One of the few individuals who can benefit from this one are patients with Parkinsons Disease. Parkinsonian tremor is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease, while it does not affect everyone with the disease. Shaking in one or both hands at rest is a common sign. The chin, lips, face, and legs may also be affected. At first, the tremor may only affect one limb or one side of the body. This can lead to difficulty bringing food to the mouth. Weighted utensils, like weighted vests for kids, exert a significant amount of force to muscles, relaxing them and making them simpler to manage. This is an excellent tool for fighting hand tremors when eating, particularly soup. Everyone, especially the elderly, like soup. Parkinson's disease is more common in the elderly, which is unfortunate. That's why a weighted spoon is the ideal treatment for hand tremors. Other than the two types of utensils that I showed you, we also offer ones that can wrap around your hand or wrist which are made for people with no hand dexterity. We can order specific ones that are tubular or cuff type utensils wherein you can slide the utensil into.
