Once expected to replace Fort McHenry, Fort Carroll now sits nearly forgotten in the mouth of the Patapsco River, just south of the recently collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. Constructed starting in 1848, it boasted a lighthouse to help aid navigation into the Baltimore Harbor. Today, this 19th century sea fort has been abandoned for more than a century, an artificial island reclaimed by nature; overgrown and a refuge for nesting colonial waterbirds. This story from the Outdoors Maryland archives first aired in 2014 -- but even 10 years later, the future plans for this forgotten sentinel remain uncertain.
