Romantic-era, German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) composed “Sommerlied” to Johann Georg Jacobi’s “Im Sommer.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe mistakenly included this poem in his 1815 works leading to misattribution! Washington Men's Camerata directed by Scott Tucker, May 2025 in DC. ENGLISH TRANSLATION (Summer Song) How the fields and meadows glisten with dew, how laden with pearls the surrounding plants! How through the bushes the wind blows with such freshness! How everywhere in the bright sunshine, sweet little birds loudly sing! Alas, when I saw my honey in her small and simple room, hidden from everything, away from the sun: where is the expansive universe with all its magnificence?
