In this video, Jon L. Weyer, MD, Ophthalmologist at The Vision Care Center in Evansville, Indiana, explains Refractive Lens Exchange. Refractive lens exchange, also called lens replacement surgery or clear lens extraction, may be a better option than LASIK for people with presbyopia and high hyperopia (farsightedness). Refractive lens exchange replaces your eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct your refractive error and achieve sharp focus. The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to cataract surgery except the lens being replaced is clear, rather than a cloudy lens due to a cataract. As in cataract surgery, several types of IOLs are available to replace your natural lens, depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes. Ask us about our premium IOLs and how they can give you crisp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts. Advanced Technology Lifestyle IOLs:The Vision Care Center is proud to offer a selection of lens choices to give a more continuous, full range of high-quality vision. They are designed to give great distance vision and greatly decrease the need for readers. The PanOptix IOL, Tecnis Symfony® Extended Depth of Focus IOL and the Crystalens Accommodating IOL are the most commonly used IOLs at The Vision Care Center to achieve spectacle independence. Compared to multifocal IOLs, they minimize side effects like glare and halos around lights. Multifocal IOLs may give the most range of vision. These advanced technology lenses are not covered by insurance and will require an additional financial contribution by the patient.
