This is the first video in our Extreme Science Challenge. All the videos are located on this playlist: • Extreme Science Challenge In each of the ten videos, there are letters that will form words. All the words together form a quote from a famous scientist. This challenge was sent out to more than 4000 elementary school children with winning classrooms receiving $1000 worth of science equipment for their classrooms. Breaking glass with sound: When struck, a wine glass vibrates around its rim at a particular frequency. For some glasses, this is a very precise frequency and these are the ones that you want for this demonstration. Adjusting the speaker so it's emitting a loud sound at exactly this frequency will then result in the wine glass vibrating. This is called resonance. If the vibration is great enough, the glass will crack. Not all glasses are created equal though. Some wine glasses (dishwasher safe) are much stronger, and even though they will have large vibrations, they will not break. Bed of Nails: The key is to make contact with many nails. When I lie down on it, I make contact with 200 nails, so each nail has to, on average, support 1 pound (0.45 kg). This is okay and is just uncomfortable. Adding the top bed of nails and the cinder block makes it more uncomfortable but still okay. At this point, I estimate that I could make contact with half the number of nails, 100, and still not puncture the skin. When striking the cinder block, the key is that it breaks! If it didn’t break, then all the kinetic energy of the sledge hammer would be transferred through the block to the top bed of nails and then to me. That would be a problem! But if the block is broken, the majority of the kinetic energy of the sledge hammer goes into breaking the block and only some of it is transferred to me. The only time it really hurt is when the cinder blocks were stronger than normal and they didn’t break well. Ouch! https://info.viu.ca/about-viu/
