Devon and Somerset Staghounds 17/8/24 Meet: Simonsbath A year ago today this hunt carried out a horrific attack on two sabs from Mendip Hunt Sabs and Devon County Hunt Saboteurs, smashing their way into the vehicle, dragging sabs out and robbing them. This is still under police investigation. Hunting nearby today, we knew we had to be there. Sadly we were unable to prevent a stag being killed. The hunt was away quicker than usual for a Saturday most likely because they expected Sabs at the hunt. Sabs did not ‘disappoint’ them and duly arrived initially viewing the hunt from the Blue Gate Road where many car supporters had parked. The hunt was concentrating its efforts near the B3358 Challacombe road. Here there seemed difficulty in splitting of a single stag to hunt and kill. Sabs walked into Tangs Bottom to view a small group of 5 stags pushed out northwards to the moor. This of course was the plan by the hunt. No boundaries, few gates and out of sight! Sabs re-grouped and travelled to Blackpitts Gate to see the field fragmented on Exe Plain. Moving on to Brendon Two Gates the huntsman and hounds with some field acting on information moved along west of Holcombe Burrows towards Farley. Clearly the stag now separated was being viewed by followers in every conceivable vehicle. He would not be able to rest but continually moved on before being killed. Sabs moved to the small community near Bridge Ball to find riders including a gun carrier positioned on the bridge. Past hunts have driven the stag all the way down the valley to Hillsford Bridge, scene of suffering ‘off the scale’ when followers have prevented the stag seeking sanctuary on the outskirts of Lynton. Hounds came close to the area obviously on a stag that was diverted up the valley sides to Cheriton and then onto Scoresdown. Here in this area the stag was killed after a continuous hunt of two hours and eight miles as he ran in the harsh terrain in oppressive heat. Riders assembled en masse on the Tarka Trail for “the viewing”, and soon enough an ATV arrived with the dead stag covered with a sheet in a very ‘amateurish’ way. Plainly obvious a stag was being concealed in the vehicle. Noticing sabs present, they roared off in a panic as riders attempted to block our way. At this time one of the Landrovers carrying hounds started moving away from the area but for some reason stopped near the entrance to the Tarka Trail. A sab filming the hounds in the back of the Landrover had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by the reversing Landrover. There was no need to reverse at all this was intimidation that could have resulted in serious injury. Many thanks to Mendip Hunt Sabs who took the wheel today, violence will never deter us, it only proves we are effective.
