Four propellers pull Solar Impulse through the air at speeds up to 49 knots (90kph). Each propeller is made of two carbon fibre and foam composite blades, with a total diameter fo 4 metres and weight of just 5kg. The maximum propeller speed is 525rpm, but the plane normally operates at much lower speeds - taking off at 420rpm and climbing at 340rpm. A teeter system helps to align the blades with the prevailing wind and also reduces resonance.
