A Mastectomy is the removal of all of the breast tissue to treat breast cancer. Patients who undergo a mastectomy for breast cancer should know: A mastectomy is the largest breast surgery offered A simple mastectomy uses a flat aesthetic closure, with the incision spanning from the edge of the sternum to the underarm Drain tubes are required to remove any fluid build-up and promote healing Depending on your health history and cancer diagnosis, some patients may be a candidate for a skin-sparing mastectomy, a technique where some or all of the skin is saved. Optional breast reconstruction may be performed during a mastectomy or after as a separate procedure, depending on your cancer diagnosis. Breast reconstruction is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Disclaimer – Your oncologist will determine the best treatment option for your breast cancer.
