Bangladesh’s interim regime is tightening its grip on the press, turning journalism into a dangerous profession. Reporters face detentions, midnight interrogations, threats, and censorship for covering rights abuses and government failures. From the arrest of Prothom Alo reporter Shamsuzzaman Shams for highlighting food inflation, to editors receiving phone calls warning them off election reporting—intimidation has become a tactic. The Cyber Security Act has deepened surveillance, forcing self-censorship as investigative reports vanish before publication. News portals that cover electoral fraud or police brutality are blocked. At the same time, selective neutrality erodes trust: Awami League supporters face repression, while BNP rallies enjoy greater freedom. Acquittals of BNP leaders and the release of 2009 BDR mutiny convicts hint at political deals, weakening judicial credibility and military morale. The consequences are grave. A press under pressure means fewer checks on power, shrinking accountability, and a failing democracy. In Bangladesh today, silencing journalists doesn’t just bury stories—it undermines the very foundations of democratic governance. #Bangladesh #PressFreedom #JournalismUnderThreat #DemocraticDeficit #HumanRights #FreeSpeech #DigitalCensorship #CyberSecurityAct #MediaSuppression #SelectiveNeutrality #OperationDevilHunt #AwamiLeague #BNP #BDRMutiny #PoliticalSuppression #StateControl #Accountability #BangladeshPolitics #CivilLiberties #TruthOnTrial
