This song is done by Alex Kamonga Feat. Evance Meleka Sponsored by Teethsavers International -TISAMALE MANO “When we talk of oral health, it is more than the teeth and gums. Oral health also includes all other supporting tissues in the mouth that may equally suffer the consequences of poor oral health hygiene. Dental caries (tooth decay) for example, is globally believed to be one of the most common chronic childhood diseases and it is also estimated that over 50 percent of 5 to 9 year old children have at least one tooth surface affected by tooth decay and that this proportion increases to 78 percent among 17-year-olds. Studies have also shown that globally, untreated tooth decay among school children impedes their education. It is estimated that 3 school days per year are lost per 100 youths aged between 5-17 years due to acute dental conditions mostly due to tooth decay. The statistics on the incidents of tooth decay globally as well as in Malawi, is worrisome considering that most oral diseases such as tooth decay, bleeding gums and oral cancers are preventable. Inadequate knowledge on effective tooth brushing techniques, dietary habits such as eating refined carbohydrates like sweets, chocolates in between meals and violent behaviors that may lead to fight, opening of bottle with teeth are some of the many factors that influence vulnerability to early loss of teeth be it in the child or adulthood life. Looking at all the facts mentioned, one would conclude that if people adopt good oral hygiene practices, then we are looking at a better Malawi which is free from various forms of oral diseases and thereby enjoying a lasting healthy smile. Although the Ministry is tirelessly doing all it can to improve the wellbeing of the general population, there are some challenges facing the delivery of dental and oral health care services in the country. Most of the dental equipment in Malawi hospitals has out lived its lifespan and need replacement. Human resource is another challenge. With the population estimated at 14 million only five Malawian dentists of which only one is in the public service. The country’s dentist population ratio stands at 1:600,000 against the recommended ratio of 1: 100,000 hence the bulk of dental work is done by dental therapists of which are equally few on the ground. Under such challenging circumstances, many patients may not be treated adequately. They may either receive suboptimal or ineffective treatment. It is this list of challenges that simple and inexpensive health promotion interventions like this committed oral health week campaign period becomes very helpful. Sincere commendation to Teethsavers International, Colgate Palmolive and other partners in Malawi, for supporting oral health activities in the country for a long time” SPEECH BY DR. CHARLES MWANSAMBO DURING THE NATIONAL ORAL HEALTH WEEK LAUNCH AT KAMUZU INSTITUTE FOR SPORTS GROUND, LILONGWE –MALAWI, ON FRIDAY, 7TH NOVEMBER, 2014.
