Compensation Considerations for Superstar Providers This presentation will focus on compensation-related issues surrounding “superstar” physicians and will include 1) Fair Market Value (“FMV”) and compensation plan considerations, 2) Auditing for compliance and operational effectiveness and 3) Practical takeaways from inside a health system. The material will cover the various possible definitions of a superstar including high-producing physicians as well as those that create value from a quality/cost/organizational standpoint. Specific topics to be covered in the FMV and compensation plan discussion include application of 90th+ percentile benchmarks, stacking elements of compensation and soft / hard compensation caps. The presentation will also address how physician arrangements should be reviewed on a collective basis to ensure compliance. In particular, we will discuss best practices for auditing such arrangements and how documentation for superstar physicians becomes particularly important for managing risk. The panel will also include practical observations and takeaways from inside a health system, including how these providers can bring value to an organization and commentary on documenting support for superstar contracts and the associated compensation levels.
