Creatures of Convenience is a solutions-focused documentary exploring the challenges our convenience culture is placing on our environment in Canada. Join filmmaker, Stuart Gillies, as he goes on a journey of discovery through British Columbia to learn what we can do as individuals and families to overcome the waste created by our convenient lifestyles. With Stuart’s wife about to give birth to his second child, he craves convenience but is also becoming increasingly aware of the environmental legacy he is leaving for his children. Is it too late to turn the tide on plastics in our ocean? Stem our fast fashion addiction? Curb our takeaway food culture? Stuart dives into the issue with scientists, psychologists, sustainability experts, industry and government to offer actionable solutions that anyone can adopt, and ultimately determine who should take responsibility for our waste. Stuart explores the complex and often confusing recycling and waste management systems and learns that not only the visible plastic pollution causes harm but also the micro particles level that come out of our daily wash loads by the millions and flow directly into our local inlets and watersheds. On his journey on unceded Coast Salish territory he meets with members of the First Nations communities whose ancestors have been taken care of the land and waters for millennia and he learns how their philosophy has shaped their behaviour around the seemingly abounded natural resources on the coast and how their intricate knowledge and deep connection to nature that provided them with a sustainable model for generations. A very different philosophy compared to his upbringing and the concerns of his parents raising him in England and the western world view he grew up with. The complexity of the issue often feels overwhelming and we witness Stuart struggling in his quest trying to solve a puzzle that seems impossible with so many pieces on the table. Understanding that he is part of the solution he finds allies and powerful leadership, coming from world renowned National Geographic Photographer Cristina Mittermeier, Haida-Nation lawyer Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson, international scientist Peter Ross and many other change-makers that are fighting for a healthier environment.
