STILL… THEY CREATE In our Honours Final Year, we had a course on Documentary filmmaking. This film was made as part of that course. “A class project.” As a team, we could not complete the shooting with full satisfaction. Before going into production, we had visualised the film in a much more detailed and refined way. But reality had its own limitations. Due to several limitations like shortage of time, budget constraints, and lack of manpower we had to work under constant pressure just to finish the project. After the shoot, we were uncertain about the outcome. We kept asking ourselves whether we had been able to visualise even half of our original idea. There was a noticeable shortage of footage, and many necessary shots could not be taken. But when the project finally came together in the edit, it felt different. Watching the completed version, I felt a sense of attachment to the work. Every second of the film carries the hard work and commitment of the entire team. Jagannath University, in my experience, did not provide us with much institutional support. The Department of Film & Television also had its limitations. However, it gave us something else…..a sense of void. I say this from a place of frustration, but also reflection. The absence we experienced pushed us to rely on ourselves. In that process, it made me stronger as a filmmaker and as an individual. For that learning, I remain thankful. There were fundamental expectations I had from the department that were not fulfilled. Still, I hope future batches will receive better opportunities and support. I believe every student of this department is a Superman in their own right. And that is a blessing for the department itself. Throughout the year, the department blames the students, and the students blame the department an endless blaming game continues. My hope is that the university will pay closer attention to this department and invest more care and responsibility into its growth. Individually, I am grateful to my course teachers, who tried to guide us despite all limitations. However, I continue to feel disappointed with the broader institutional support from the university. Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to every individual who contributed to this documentary, both onscreen and offscreen.
