2024 Marji Gesick 50 mile mountain bike race

The Marji Gesick race takes place in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on rough, rugged singletrack. There are 20, 50 and 100 mile versions of the mountain bike race. I opted to do the 50—which this year was actually 62 miles—because when I raced the 50 previously (in 2021), I felt there was a lot of room for improvement! Although the Marji is a race, there are no age group categories or podiums. Winners take home a $1 bill. And those who finish the 100 in under 12 hours receive a belt buckle. No woman has ever been awarded one. The 50 (62 mile) race starts in Marquette, Michigan and ends in Ishpeming, Michigan. The course includes about 8,000 ft in elevation gain, mostly on punchy, steep hills. The RAMBA trails in Ishpeming are notoriously rocky and rooty and make you work for every inch of trail. Racers must collect all of the tokens at checkpoints along the way and present them to an official at the end to be an official #FINISHER.
