Norma has a bad relationship with her mother, which has presumably been a long-standing dislike, as Annie Blackburn briefly inquires about this upon coming to Twin Peaks, and doesn't argue when Norma tries to drop the subject. Their ties are broken for good when it turns out her mother is in fact a famous food critic (M.T. Wentz) who writes under a pseudonym, and ultimately gives the Double R Diner an unflattering review. Norma, who is appalled at her mother's lack of sympathy for what Norma has dedicated her life to, tells her she never wants to see her again.
