How Beer Is Made Beer is one of the oldest and most popular drinks in the world, and making it is both an art and a science. The process starts with malted barley, which is barley grains that have been soaked, sprouted, and then dried. The malt is crushed and mixed with hot water in a process called mashing, which releases natural sugars from the grains. This sugary liquid, known as wort, is then separated and boiled. During the boiling stage, hops are added. Hops are flowers that give beer its distinctive bitterness, aroma, and flavor while also acting as a natural preservative. After boiling, the wort is cooled and transferred to a fermentation tank. Here, yeast is added, and this is where the magic happens—yeast consumes the sugars in the wort and turns them into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Once fermentation is complete, the beer is aged, filtered, and carbonated to achieve its final flavor and texture. Finally, it’s bottled, canned, or kegged for distribution. From simple grains and hops to the refreshing drink we enjoy today, beer-making combines tradition, chemistry, and craftsmanship to create a beverage that’s been loved for thousands of years.
