In 1961, singer Del Shannon had a huge hit with a song entitled "Runaway." In part, Runaway's success can be attributed to the catchy, high pitched solo, which was written and performed by Max Crook. As Runaway has always been one of my favorite songs, I decided several months ago that I wanted to use the sound from the keyboard solo on one of my original songs. Thinking it was probably a standard keyboard effect, I went on the Wikipedia article for "Runaway" to learn more. Much to my surprise, I discovered that the solo on the Runaway recording was played on a unique instrument called the Musitron that had been invented by Max Crook. Intrigued, I called Max, and he referred me to one of his friends, Scott Ludwig, who also had performed with Del Shannon. It turns out that Scott had an invented an instrument very similar to the Mustron, called the Sonocon. Scott said he would be happy to play on my song and on November 12, 2010 we recorded the Sonocon part. Due to the notoriety of Runaway, and the uniqueness of the instrument used in the song, I thought it would be neat to conduct a brief interview with Scott so he could discuss his invention in more detail. Once my song is finished, I will definitely post a copy of it online.
