Brake drag can destroy pads and rotors quickly, and in some cases it can even cause a vehicle to slow down without touching the brake pedal. One of the most overlooked causes is a failed brake hose that restricts fluid and keeps the caliper from releasing properly. In this video we diagnose and fix severe brake drag caused by a bad brake hose. The issue was caused by a hose that had internally failed, preventing brake fluid from returning and leaving the caliper partially applied. To fix the problem we walk through: Diagnosing brake drag and identifying the stuck caliper Inspecting the brake hose for external failure Replacing the brake hose, pads, rotors, and calipers Performing a manual brake bleed Running an ABS brake bleed to finish the repair Although this repair was demonstrated on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, the same type of brake hose failure can happen on almost any vehicle with hydraulic disc brakes. If you’re experiencing brake drag, uneven brake wear, or a wheel that gets unusually hot after driving, a failing brake hose is something worth checking.
