This wonderful violin is a very good and characteristic example of Giovanni Grancino's work. Made in Milan, Italy in 1706, it bears the original label solidifying its authenticity. Below is a representation of the label: Giovanni Grancino in Contrada Largha di Milano al segno della Corona 1706 This violin was made just before Giovanni entered his later phase (from 1709) and is still inspired by the Amati style and outline, with a medium arching and relatively straight F holes. Sound: The sound of Grancino's violins is often described as powerful but with a velvety and smooth quality. This violin does complete justice to this description. The overall feel is a very rich and warm tone with strong resonance throughout. The E string can soar beautifully, with a sound full of lyricism but should the player choose to dig in and really project, the opportunities to do so are endless. Equally on the G string, as you shift into higher positions, the power of the instrument really shines through. The playability is fantastic and the wide range of colours makes this a versatile instrument for any player. Composition: Back : Crafted from two pieces of beautiful maple. The wood showcases a narrow figure running horizontally. Sides and Scroll: The sides of the violin are similar to the back and the scroll is unfigured. Table: The table, formed from two pieces of spruce, displays a medium grain throughout. Varnish: The violin is enveloped in a deep brown colour with a slightly reddish hue over a lighter golden, honey-coloured ground. Overall, this is a very attractive instrument for a player or collector. It possesses the qualities that a musician would look for in their instrument but the historical significance and name that would speak to an avid collector. Being priced very reasonably for this maker, this instrument is a must-try.
