Performed at “Songs of Love” concert for OSU Women’s Club on 2/16/26 "Everybody Loves Somebody" was written in 1947 by Irving Taylor and pianist Ken Lane. Initially, the song was not a hit for either Peggy Lee or Frank Sinatra, but in 1964, Ken was accompanying Dean Martin for an LP session for which they needed one more song and had an extra hour of recording time . . . so Ken suggested that Dean re-record his old song. Dean had not had a top 40 hit since 1958. In 1964, with the British Invasion in full swing, few had hopes that an Italo- American crooner would sway many teenagers. Dean resented rock n' roll, and his attitude created conflict at home with his 12-year-old son who worshipped The Beatles. He told his son, "I'm gonna knock your pallies off the charts," and did just that when "Everybody Loves Somebody" knocked "A Hard Day's Night" out of the No.1 Billboard slot.
