I’m embarrassed to wear them when friends are around. I went on a hike with a friend one day Wearing those shoes, I should probably say, With the soles all worn down, Losing grip on the ground, Every muscle in me screaming “Just turn around!” I’m covered in sweat And though the journey led up Every step brought me down To the moments, the memories I’d rather forget. Whatever it was, these shoes carried it all, Each scuff marked a heartache, a failure, a fall, Each stain held a memory of guilt and regret, From times I’d pressed on though my whole heart was spent. Each rip and each tear marked a failed attempt Not even to mention the horrible scent! They wreaked of old grudges I’d never forgiven, For those that I blame for the life I now live in. As I trudged up this mountain of shattered hopes, I tripped and ripped a big hold in the toe! I stopped for a breath and I looked at my friend as she said, “Those shoes have got to go!” Tears sprung to my eyes as I said with a sigh, “I know.” But my friend couldn’t see, These tattered old shoes aren’t easy to lose They had become a part of me! So I’d patch up the toe and off I’d go, I’d keep cropping them out of every photo. Don’t give me that look, you know what I mean. We all have things we don’t want to be seen. We hide behind smiles so they don’t see us cry, We crop out our problems but can’t sleep at night, Change doesn’t come easy and so we just hide, When Love offers truth, we hold on to the lie That we’ll never be worthy, We’re not good enough, We bury our hearts underneath all this stuff. But hey, the shoe fits so it must be okay, We tie up those laces and go on our way. It’s so easy to speculate What others ought to do When you don’t live their story, You’re not in their shoes. It’s true, I do agree We all reap just what we sow, But when it’s all you’ve ever known, It’s all you’ll ever be. Trapped inside the cycle of endless poverty So listen up! ‘Cause here’s the truth: We all desire something new But you can’t stuff old footwear inside a new shoe! You’ve got to step out, leave old things behind, Trade those old shoes for a new state of mind. Next time you see someone tattered and torn, Who you’d think is strange by the clothes they’ve worn, Don’t look away! Don’t hide from their pain. Embrace the story etched on their face. Take a look at yourself and consider the times you’ve also wrestled with change. When our gaze falls from someone’s face To the shoes upon their feet. We’re diminishing the light of their humanity And confirming those old shoes hold their identity. But when you raise your gaze to look in someone’s soul, You light the spark that sets them free, that says you’re not alone. A simple touch can plant a seed, A look that says, “You’re just like me,” A stroll in someone else’s shoes Can break the chains of poverty. (c) Laura Lieben, 2019
